GAPP Approval Timeline: What to Expect in the First 30–60 Days
Once your GAPP paperwork is in, the waiting begins — and not knowing what's happening behind the scenes is one of the hardest parts. This guide lays out a realistic GAPP approval timeline so you know roughly where you stand and what to expect at each stage.
Every case is different, so think of these as typical ranges rather than guarantees. Your Medicaid case manager or care coordinator can give you the most accurate status for your child.
Before the clock starts: gathering documents
The timeline doesn't really begin until your documentation is complete. Collecting physician orders, diagnosis records, and clinical notes can take a few days to a couple of weeks depending on how quickly providers respond. Starting this while your child is still in the hospital, if applicable, can save real time.
Roughly the first 30 days: submission and review
Once a complete package is submitted, the state reviews it for eligibility and medical necessity. Approval often lands around the 30-day mark when everything is in order. During this window, the reviewers may request additional information — responding quickly keeps things moving.
Up to 60 days: complex or incomplete cases
More complex cases, or applications missing a document, can extend the timeline toward 60 days. If your child also needs to establish Medicaid through Katie Beckett/TEFRA first, that review happens before GAPP and adds time on the front end.

After approval: care begins
